KIEV, Feb. 9 — A team of German and Canadian doctors is preparing to see Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko in her prison on Monday as she suffers from “horrendous” pain, her daughter said Thursday.

The doctors, whose visit is being organized by the German and Canadian embassies, are currently clearing their arrival with the Ukrainian foreign ministry and prison authorities.

“We hope the independent team will arrive on Monday and will be able to accurately diagnose her and to understand what has been really happening to her body,” Eugenia Tymoshenko said Thursday.

Tymoshenko, behind bars since August 5, has been suffering from acute pain for months, while her body has at one point developed a mysterious rash, according to her lawyer.

She collapsed on December 6 and was unconsciousness for two hours, which may be the result of medication given to her by prison doctors, Tymoshenko’s allies have said.

Computer tomography and other medical tests taken the next morning had showed no serious health problems for Tymoshenko, prison authorities said.

Meanwhile, Tymoshenko’s pain has become much worse over the past several days after prison personnel had stopped giving her pain killers, Serhiy Vlasenko, Tymoshenko’s defense lawyer said Thursday.

Eugenia confirmed her mother had been feeling “horrendous” pain since Friday after prison doctors had stopped giving her the pain killers.

Eugenia said her mother was denied the pain killers as a part of pressure to accept Ukrainian doctors, appointed by the healthcare ministry, to the international team, something she has so far refused to do.

Raisa Moiseyenko, deputy healthcare minister, said Ukrainian doctors will be joining their German and Canadian counterparts during the prison appointment, but it was yet unclear in what capacity.

“The truth is that they will be there anyway by the order of the healthcare minister,” Moiseyenko said. “The question is in what capacity they will work.”

The team of German and Canadian doctors was originally expected to come on Wednesday, but the foreign ministry had requested additional papers to clear the visit.

The German doctors already provided all required papers, and the Canadian doctors were expected to submit their papers shortly, Moiseyenko said.

The foreign ministry pledged clear the doctors without further delay once the required papers are submitted, including documents detailing medical equipment that doctors plan to carry with them.

“The Ukrainian party one more time confirmed its readiness to accept foreign specialists so that the joint medical team can start its work shortly,” the ministry said in a statement. (tl/ez)
