Ukraine trade unions come out against national retirement age hike

KIEV, Nov. 9 – Ukraine's trade unions have issued a statement ahead of the IMF mission's visit to Ukraine, in which they called for the resolution of problems by intensifying work on bringing wages out of the shadows, rather than raising the retirement age, expanding employment, and increasing the wage fund through a rise in the share of wages in operating costs for production.

Economy minister forecasts 12% decline in Ukraine’s GDP this year

KIEV, Nov. 6 – Ukraine's gross domestic product is expected to fall by 12% in 2009, forecasts Economy Minister Bohdan Danylyshyn.

"Despite the fact that we have a low comparative basis for the second half of 2008 and a certain revival of the economy seen from the second quarter, the [GDP] decline is most likely to be about 12% over the year in general," he said in an interview with the 2000 weekly.


Tymoshenko calls for mining enterprises to buy on spot markets

US to donate 930,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine in early December

KIEV, Nov. 6 – The United States will donate Ukraine 930,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine out of domestic reserves in early December, the U.S. Embassy's press service said on Friday.

"In an effort to stop the global spread of pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza virus, the United States is planning to donate 10 percent of US domestic H1N1 vaccine supply, as it becomes available, to a WHO-led H1N1 vaccine initiative.


NBU council chief calls for deficit no higher than $5 billion in 2009

KIEV, Nov. 7 – Ukraine should try to retain its foreign trade deficit in 2009 at $5 billion, said Petro Poroshenko, head of the Council of the National Bank of Ukraine.

"We believe that the deficit in the balance of payments and the trade balance next year should not exceed $5 billion," he said at a briefing on Thursday.
