Yulia to reverse Viktor’s privatizations
Journal Staff Report

KIEV, Oct. 11 – Yulia Tymoshenko, the leader of Ukraine’s largest opposition party, said Monday all state assets sold under President Viktor Yanukovych’s leadership will be returned back to the state when she comes to power.

The message echoes Tymoshenko’s plans of “re-privatizing” about 3,000 companies when she became prime minister for the first time in March 2005 and scared off foreign and domestic investors.

“All the things that they are picking up today with such an enthusiasm we will return back,” Tymoshenko said in an interview with ICTV late Monday.

“Everything counts today,” Tymoshenko said. “Today there is everything to make sure that after they are gone the Black Sea shelf is returned, the companies are returned.”

The mentioning of the Black Sea shelf indicates that she plans to target Vanco Energy’s consortium aimed at exploring and developing an offshore area near Kerch in the Black Sea.

The U.S.-based oil company Vanco leads the consortium known as Vanco Prykerchenska, which among shareholders has Rinat Akhmetov, the wealthiest Ukrainian businessman and one of the key financial sponsors of Yanukovych.

The Yanukovych government has been preparing to sell UkrTelekom, Ukraine’s state-owned phone company, before the end of the year. Akhmetov was mentioned by analysts as one of potential bidders for the asset.
