KIEV, Jan. 10 – President Viktor Yanukovych suffered a setback on Thursday when Parliament refused to support his planned reshuffle at the National Bank of Ukraine, underscoring his lack of majority control.

KIEV, Jan. 10 - Ukraine will postpone indefinitely a bill allowing privatization of its natural gas pipelines amid indications Russia has not been willing to compromise and reduce gas prices, a senior pro-government lawmaker said Tuesday.


Tymoshenko loses consciousness in prison

KIEV, Jan. 10 – Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, serving a seven-year sentence in a Kharkiv region prison, collapsed on December 6 and stayed unconscious for two hours before getting medical treatment, an ally of hers said Tuesday.


President signs ratification protocol for Energy Community accession

KIEV, Jan. 7 – President Viktor Yanukovych has signed a law on the ratification of the protocol on Ukraine's accession to the Energy Community.

Parliament, on December 15, 2010, ratified the protocol on the country's accession to the Energy Community.


Former Ukrainian economy minister refused bail release by Czech court

KIEV, Jan. 10 – Prague City Court (the Czech Republic) again has refused to release on bail former Ukrainian economy minister Bohdan Danylyshyn, who was detained in the Czech Republic, as Czech authorities have fears that he could escape from the Czech Republic.


Yanukovych bank set to double its assets

KIEV, Jan. 10 – A small commercial bank controlled by the family of President Viktor Yanukovych plans to almost double its capital soon by injecting 100 million hryvnias through an upcoming private share placement.


IMF allows Ukraine to tap $2 billion of reserves to pay bills

WASHINGTON, Dec. 31 - The International Monetary Fund has agreed to modify Ukraine's performance criterion on Net International Reserves (NIR) to lower the NIR floor as of the end of December by about $2 billion to help the country honor its external financial obligations, Max Alier, the IMF resident representative for Ukraine, said in a statement.


December CPI surge brings Ukraine 2009 inflation rate to 12.3%

KIEV, Jan. 10 – Ukraine’s consumer prices rose 0.9% on the month in December pushing the country’s 2009 inflation to 12.3%, a figure that far exceeds the government’s original forecast, the State Statistics Committee reported.

The government, which originally predicted the prices to grow 9.5% on the year in 2009, had overshot the forecast due to massive borrowing to cover widening budget deficit.


Ukraine taps foreign exchange reserves to pay December natgas bill

KIEV, Jan. 10 – Ukraine tapped its foreign exchange reserves on January 6 to pay about $890 million to Russian gas giant Gazprom for natural gas imported in December, President Viktor Yushchenko said Sunday.


Tymoshenko may contest election results

KIEV, Jan. 10 – Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who opinion polls show may lose the presidential election to opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych, Sunday pledged to contest the vote in courts unless legislation is amended to eliminate possible fraud.
