KIEV, Jan. 10 – Ukraine tapped its foreign exchange reserves on January 6 to pay about $890 million to Russian gas giant Gazprom for natural gas imported in December, President Viktor Yushchenko said Sunday.

The payment, which comes as the government is short of cash, averted complications that could otherwise cause gas supply disruptions between Russia and the European Union via Ukrainian gas pipelines.
