Russian government suing Ukraine in Kiev court over UESU case

KIEV, Sept. 7 – Russia’s Defense Ministry of Russia has filed a lawsuit in Kiev Economic Court against the Ukrainian government for non-payment of UAH 3.239.45 billion under the criminal case on the activities of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine Corporation.


Russian UESU lawsuit a gift to party, says Batkivschyna official

KIEV, Sept. 10 – The Russian Defense Ministry's lawsuit to recover $405.5 million of the debt of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine (UESU) Corporation from the Cabinet of Ministers, which was led by former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in 1995-1997, has been described by the Batkivschyna Party as a gift, the Kommersant Ukraine newspaper wrote on Monday.


Batkivschyna leader, in Italy, say’s he’ll sue over Basis liquidation

KIEV, Sept. 10 - Arsen Avakov, the head of the Batkivschyna United Opposition election campaign and the ex-head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration, who is currently in Italy, said that he plans to file a number of lawsuits at European courts against the actions of Kharkiv officials involved in the liquidation of Basis Bank.


Europe rights watchdog warns on election

KIEV, Sept. 10 - Europe's top human rights watchdog urged Ukrainian authorities Monday to conduct a free and fair parliamentary election next month, but warned that the imprisonment of Ukraine's top opposition leader bodes ill for the country.


IMF predicts rise in Ukraine state debt to 35% of GDP in 2009

MOSCOW, Sept. 9 - The International Monetary Fund has predicted that Ukraine's state debt, including direct debt and debt guaranteed by the government, will increase from 19.9% of GDP in 2008 to 35.4% in 2009, its highest level since 2002.


Government and IMF to lower 2010 fiscal deficit target to 4% of GDP

KIEV, Sept. 10 – The Ukrainian authorities and the International Monetary Fund's mission intend to improve a fiscal deficit target for 2010 from 6.5% to 4% of GDP, or UAH 42.1 billion, at the expense of cutting subsidies on the increased gas price for households and heat and power supply companies, holding tax and pension reforms.


President orders defense capability check

KIEV, Sept. 10 – President Viktor Yushchenko ordered the inspection of Ukraine’s defense capabilities minutes after Russia had approved legislation allowing the use of force overseas for protection of its military bases and holders of Russian passports.


Next IMF mission to visit in October to check on memorandum execution

KIEV, Sept. 9 – The next mission from the International Monetary Fund is to visit Ukraine in October this year to determine how well a memorandum between Ukraine and the IMF has been implemented, acting Finance Minister Ihor Umansky said.

KIEV, Sept. 10 – Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on Wednesday ruled out a major increase in defense spending as had been requested by Ukraine’s Defense Ministry following Russia’s incursion into Georgia last month.
