EBRD upgrades outlook on Eastern European transition economies

KIEV, May 19 – The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has revised upward its outlook for economic recovery for 2010 in Eastern European countries with transition economy to 3.7%, from 3.3% forecasted in January.


Central bank enters interbank forex market to buy euros, dollars

KIEV, May 19 – The National Bank of Ukraine entered the interbank forex market on Tuesday to buy euros at UAH 9.7 per euro and U.S. dollars at UAH 7.925 per U.S. dollar, the rate it has offered since April 12, market operators told Interfax-Ukraine.


Russians interested in buying Ukrainian shipbuilding companies

MOSCOW, May 18 – Russia wants about 10 Ukrainian enterprises to be merged with OJSC United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), said Adnrey Kurasov, deputy head of the Shipbuilding Industry and Marine Equipment Department of the Russian Industry and Trade Ministry.


Sberbank considering teaming with Rosatom on Khmelnysky project

KIEV, May 18 - Sberbank of Russia, jointly with Russia's Rosatom Company, is considering a project to complete the construction of reactors at Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant, the bank's president and board chairman, German Gref, told the press in Kiev on Tuesday.


YTD GDP increase may come to 5.8%-6% through April, says NBU advisor

KIEV, May 18 – The growth of Ukraine's gross domestic product in January through April may be between 5.8% and 6% compared to the same period last year, due to higher output in industry, according to Valeriy Lytvytsky, the head of the advisors to the governor of the National Bank of Ukraine.


EBRD announces $250 million subordinated loan to Ukreximbank

KIEV, May 18 - The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development announced it is planning its largest-ever single investment in Ukraine, a $250 million subordinated loan to Ukreximbank, to support the continued funding of the Ukrainian real economy by one of the country’s leading financial institutions.

The project is expected to be finalized early this week.


Turboatom to supply two steam turbines for Iranian power plant

KIEV, May 18 – Kharkiv-based Turboatom, the largest turbine equipment producer in Ukraine, by summer 2011 is to supply two steam turbines for the Bisotun heat power plant in Iran with the capacity of 315 MW, the Turboatom's press service reported on May 15.

NBU: ‘Dollarization’ of economy down slightly so far this year

KIEV, May 18 – The level of the dollarization of Ukraine's economy as of April declined to 30.1%, from 30.6% registered at the beginning of the current year, the National Bank of Ukraine reported on its official Web site.


EBRD to give Ukraine EUR135 million to rebuild Chernobyl shelter

KIEV, May 19 - The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on Monday agreed to donate 135 million euros to Ukraine to support efforts to clean up the site of Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

The money will pay for the construction of the New Safe Confinement, a structure that will be built over Chernobyl’s reactor 4, which was damaged by an explosion in 1986.
