Around 1% of the medicine sold in Ukraine is fake, official says

KIEV, July 21 – Around 1% of the medicine sold in Ukraine sold is fake or of low quality, State Service for Medicine Chairman Oleksiy Soloviov said.

He that the low quality medicine comes mainly from Southeast Asia. He said that the fake medicine is sold in large volumes and advertised on TV.

Growing genetically modified plants is illegal in Ukraine, govt says

KIEV, July 21 – The growing of any genetically modified plants in Ukraine is illegal, as there have been no official applications to grow the said plants, according to the Environment Protection Ministry.


ArcelorMital buys Ukrainian limestone producer to supply its unit

KIEV, July 21 – ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel producer, acquired Beryslav Construction Materials Plant in Ukraine to supply limestone to its Ukrainian steel making unit, the company reported Wednesday.

ArcelorMittal did not disclose the deal's price tag.


Ukraine allocates 50 million hryvnias for missile fuel disposal

KIEV, July 21 – The government allocated 50 million hryvnias from the stabilization fund for the disposal of solid fuel from SS-24 intercontinental ballistic missiles at Pavlohrad chemical plant.

The National Space Agency of Ukraine was selected the main manager of the funds.


Steel and pig iron production expected to grow 14% this month

KIEV, July 20 - Steel and pig iron production in Ukraine will grow 14% in July to 2.65 million tons and 2.3 million tons, respectively, while the output of rolled products will grow 10% to 2.24 million tons, Industrial Policy Minister Volodymyr Novytskyy told the government newspaper Uriadovy Courier.


Share of bad loans in banking system up 0.5%, to 5.4%, as of July 1

KIEV, July 20 – The share of bad loans in the overall amount of loans provided by Ukrainian banks to their clients in June 2009 grew by 0.5 percentage notches, to 5.4% by July 1, according to the National Bank of Ukraine.


NBU says cenbank support of economy is hampered by low lending

KIEV, July 20 – The potential of the National Bank of Ukraine to support the economy is being curbed by the low lending activity of some banks, the NBU said in a letter to banks.

"The significant level of liquidity amid the insufficiently active use of free funds by some banks is limiting the NBU's ability to support the liquidity of those banks which actively work on the market and which are [aiding] the renewal of economic growth," reads the letter.

KIEV, July 20 – Naftogaz Ukrayiny said it is alarmed by the repeated attempts of some officials in Ukraine and the European Union to give one-sided and biased evaluation of the holding's activities in the mass media.


Kirovohrad’s Creativ Group builds $39 million soy plant with Russians

KIEV, July 21 - Creativ Group (Kirovohrad), one of the largest vegetable oil producers in Ukraine, jointly with its Russian partners has built a soybean plant in Kirovohrad worth around $39 million, investing some $20 million in it and receiving a 51% stake in the plant.
