KIEV, Jan. 17 – Serhiy Tyhypko, a former governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, on Sunday surprised many observers by performing strongly at the presidential election, firmly securing third place and a political future.

Tyhypko, who last month’s polls suggested would score 9.5%, apparently collected more that 13% of the vote, according to four independent exit polls released late Sunday.
