KIEV, Nov. 6 – Ukraine used Special Drawing Rights, or SDRs, potential claims on the freely usable currencies of International Monetary Fund members, to pay for Russian natural gas imports in October, officials said Friday.
Ukraine had $2.04 billion worth of SDRs, which sometimes is referred to as “paper gold,” in reserves of the central bank before the transaction, according to the office of President Viktor Yushchenko.
