LISBON, June 24 - Portugal Tuesday signed an agreement with Ukraine over defense cooperation, presented as firm backing for Kiev's North Atlantic Treaty Organization and European Union membership aspirations, AFP reported.

Portuguese premier Jose Socrates joined Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko for the signing ceremony, with the Lisbon government saying the deal was agreed within a framework of "Euro-Atlantic partnership for NATO peace."
