Ukraine engages rebel infiltration teams
Journal Staff Report

KIEV, July 24 – Ukrainian forces on Saturday engaged two pro-Russian separatist reconnaissance teams in the conflict zone, while military intelligence reported enemy tanks and heavy artillery positioning to attack.

The teams of up to 20 soldiers each tried to cross into the territory controlled by Ukraine near Novozvanivka, but had been stopped by the opened fire.

Two Ukrainian soldiers were killed and seven wounded in the confrontation, the ATO army command reported. Four enemy soldiers were killed and a dozen wounded.

The military intelligence reported Sunday the separatists have been moving and placing tanks and heavy artillery and rocket launchers to positions near Shyroka Balka, Stakhanov, Oleksandrivk, Horlivka and Luhansk.

The developments are signs the confrontation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions continue to escalate, while Russia continued to supply lethal weapons and ammunition to support the rebels.

Oleksandr Turchynov, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, said earlier this month that Russia increased supplies of weapons to the rebels, apparently preparing for an offensive.

More than 52% of Ukrainian said they fear of a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, while 34% did not see that threat, according to a recent poll by the Sofia Center for Social Studies.

Twenty-seven per cent of the respondents said they were ready to help territorial defense squads, should the military conflict with Russia escalate; 39% intend to join calls for an end to the war; and a quarter (25%) have no intention of "interfering in anything."

Forty-four per cent said the West will not soften its sanctions against Russia any time soon, not until the Donbas conflict has been settled, according to the poll findings. Thirty-four per cent predicted an imminent softening of the sanctions in the near future.

When asked about ways to resolve the Donbas conflict, 25% said the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk republics should be granted a special status but within Ukraine; 23% support active fighting and restoration of full control over the territories; and 18% said Ukraine should "fence itself off" from the breakaway Donetsk and Luhansk.
