35% of Ukrainians use bribes to help solve problems, survey shows
Journal Staff Report

KIEV, April 25 - More than a third of Ukrainian citizens believe that it is easier to resolve problems with the help of bribes, according to a survey conducted at the request of the Democratic Initiatives Foundation and Kiev International Institute of Sociology from March 3 to March 13.

"According to the survey, bribes are largely initiative in nature. According to 35% of the population, people give bribes because it's easier to resolve their problems. Compared with figures for 2009, these sentiments grew by 13%," Director of the Democratic Initiatives Foundation Iryna Bekeshkina said in Kiev on Wednesday.

She said that 26.3% of respondents said that people give bribes because it is already common. Some 19.4% believe that they give bribes because this is required from them, and 6.9% give bribes because they are forced to do so, since the Ukrainian legislation is too confusing and people cannot understand it individually.
