KIEV, Jan. 10 - Ukraine’s imports of Russian natural gas dropped to 24.4 billion cubic meters in 2012, less than originally expected, preliminary data from the State Statistics Committee indicated on Thursday.
Ukraine was originally expected to import 26 billion cu m of gas from Russia in 2012, down from 40 billion cu m in 2011, amid the government’s efforts to cut dependence on Russian energy.
The figures suggest that the government has been more active and persistent in trying to reduce gas imports from Russia as the two countries have failed to reach a deal on lower gas prices.
