KIEV, March 22 - Ukraine imported 2.523 billion cubic meters of gas originating in Russia in January, 58.3% or 3.6 bcm less than the same month last year.
Imports of Russian gas fell 34.7% or $558.926 million in value to $1.052 billion, the State Statistics Service said.
The imports fell so much because the state-owned oil and gas company Naftogaz Ukrayiny boosted gas purchases in January last year in order to fulfill a demand by the Stockholm Arbitration Court to return 12.1 bcm of gas to Swiss trader RosUkrEnergo. Imports from Russia in January this year were virtually level with the 2.551 bcm of gas Ukraine bought from Russia two years previously, in January 2010.
