Tymoshenko may suffer from herniated disc
Journal Staff Report

KIEV, Feb. 15 – Ukraine’s jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko may have a herniated disc that has been causing back pain, and this may require surgery outside prison, Ukraynska Pravda reported Wednesday, citing a source.

The report came hours after two German doctors had examined Tymoshenko in the Kharkiv prison. The doctors have left their conclusion in a sealed envelope to be delivered to Tymoshenko before heading back to Germany.

Serhiy Vlasenko, Tymoshenko’s defense attorney, disputed the disclosed diagnosis, although he said he had actually not seen the original conclusion. He said, however, he will ask the prosecutor general’s office to investigate the apparent leak.

Meanwhile, three Canadian doctors have been still examining Tymoshenko on Wednesday and their exam is likely to continue on Thursday.

A herniated disc happens when discs in the spine bulge from their proper place. This is most common in the lower spine.

Herniated discs can occur when discs lose water content, become flatter, and provide less cushioning. If they become too weak, the outer part may tear. The inside part of the disc may then push through the tear. This can put pressure on the nerves next to the disc, causing pain.

Tymoshenko, in custody since August 5, 2011, was jailed to seven years in prison in October for abuse of power while ordering to sign a controversial natural gas agreement with Russia in January 2009. She lost the appeal in December and is currently serving jail sentence in the Kharkiv prison.

Tymoshenko have been complaining of acute back pain in jail for months, and at some point has also reported a mysterious rash on her body. She refused to be examined by Ukrainian doctors amid concerns her illnesses may be disclosed by prison authorities without her will.

Tymoshenko has apparently allowed the conclusion by German doctors to be disclosed to other members of the international team of doctors that are supposed to examine her.

“There are preliminary recommendations from the German doctors,” Raisa Moiseyenko, a deputy healthcare minister and the head of the team appointed by the ministry, said Wednesday. “As far as I know, the recommendations have little difference with those that had been given by doctors from our country.”

Moiseyenko said Tymoshenko had agreed the conclusion by the German doctors to be disclosed to other members of the international team, which also includes Canadian physicians, a prison doctor and a doctor appointed by the healthcare ministry.

Yevhen Poliakov, the head of the prison guard department supervising all Ukrainian prisons, said that for the time of the medical exam Tymoshenko will be kept away from visitors, including her legal defense team.

“This is done in consideration of security,” Poliakov said, Interfax reported.

Eugenia Tymoshenko, the daughter of the former prime minister and a member of her legal defense team, said she hadn’t been allowed to visit her mother for two days.

“It’s the second day that I am not allowed in,” Eugenia said. “I don’t know what happens with my mom. Nobody knows what happens, neither family nor the attorney.” (tl/ez)
