KIEV, Oct. 17 - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is expected to arrive in Donetsk on Tuesday for talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych, officials said Monday.
This is expected to be their first meeting after both reported progress in natural gas talks in Moscow on September 24. No official comments were made on details of the progress.
Ukraine has been unsuccessfully trying to re-negotiate the gas deal with Russia for the past 18 months, seeking to lower gas prices. The 10-year deal, reached by then Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in January 2009, was repeatedly called “unfair” and “enslaving” by Prime Minister Mykola Azarov.
