MOSCOW, June 6 - Russia and Ukraine have reached a fundamental understanding on the settlement of the Strait of Kerch issue, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"The Strait of Kerch is a vital artery both for Russia and Ukraine. It provides access to the Sea of Azov. In the context of geopolitical reasoning and body movements which are related to hydrocarbons, transit and other potentials of this very important region, the Sea of Azov, its legal regime, certainly, matter. We have now reached a principled understanding with the Ukrainian leadership. We know how to settle the Strait of Kerch problem," Lavrov said on the Ekho Moskvy radio station on Sunday.
