KIEV, July 10 – With opposition groups crying foul, Parliament’s ruling coalition secured approval of a law on Saturday that will govern local elections on October 31.
The law, approved by 259 lawmakers in the 450-seat legislature, lets only established parties nominate candidates, eliminating from competition popular blocs, such as the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc.
The law also allows only those parties that have local branches registered more than a year ago to nominate the candidates, de-facto eliminating from competition young parties, such as Arseniy Yatseniuk’s Front of Changes.
