KIEV, Aug. 3 – The number of unprofitable banks grew to 64 in Q2, up from 41 in the first quarter of 2009.
The National Bank of Ukraine reported that the overall net losses of Ukraine's banking system January through June were estimated at UAH 14.321 billion, including UAH 7.301 billion in the second quarter. As of July 1, 2009, Ukraine's largest bank accounted for 63.4%, or UAH 9.079 billion, of the banks' consolidated losses for the first half of 2009.
Among Ukraine's top 18 banks, the heaviest losses were sustained by Ukrprombank (UAH 4.603 billion), Raiffeisen Bank Aval (UAH 1.085 billion), Nadra Bank (1.041 billion), UkrSibbank (UAH 831 million), the First Ukrainian International Bank (UAH 604 million), and OTP Bank (UAH 565 million).
