MOSCOW, April 29 – Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Gazprom will forgo charging Ukraine a $2 billion penalty for importing a lower-than-expected amount of natural gas in January through April.

Putin made the promise after talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Tymoshenko in Moscow amid concerns that the penalty could send Naftogaz Ukrayiny into bankruptcy.
