KIEV, Jan. 28 – The attempts to dismiss Volodymyr Stelmakh, the governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, cost the bank $450 million in unnecessary interventions to support the local currency, a senior official said Wednesday.
Anatoliy Shapovalov, the first deputy governor at the NBU, said the bank had to increase interventions over the past three days after a coalition of parties led by Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko had tried to dismiss Stelmakh.
