KIEV, Jan. 10 – President Viktor Yushchenko on Thursday submitted a number of bills for Parliament’s urgent approval, including a bill that increases his powers while nominating the prime minister, foreign and defense ministers.

The bills seek to change a controversial law that had been approved by the pro-Russian coalition a year ago and had triggered a major power struggle between Yushchenko and then-Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.
