KIEV, Nov. 25 – Ukraine will continue to rely on its coal-mining sector in order to meet its long-term energy needs, but the industry must undertake a massive modernization, President Viktor Yushchenko said Sunday.

Yushchenko spoke as officials had admitted the recent methane gas explosion at the Zasyadko coal mine, Ukraine’s worst mining disaster ever, had claimed the lives of 100 coal miners.
