KIEV, Oct. 3 – President Viktor Yushchenko called on main political parties on Wednesday to avoid confrontation and to reach consensus over national issues, adding that opposition leaders should be given top posts in Parliamentary committees.

Yushchenko said pro-Western parties had enough votes to form the government, but insisted the opposition should be given the posts in Parliament and, perhaps even in the government, to ensure proper checks-and-balances.
