ROME, July 10 – Ukraine is constructing over 700 MW of new wind power and more than 200 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS), Andriy Konechenkov, Chairman of the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA), said at the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC2025) in Rome on Wednesday.
“Even more importantly, we have projects already underway,” Konechenkov said. “More than 700 MW of wind capacity is under construction, along with over 200 MW of BESS – a key component for a flexible and modern grid.”
He noted that between 2022 and Q1 2025, Ukraine commissioned 258 MW of new wind capacity, 50% of which was funded by international investors. He described this as evidence of "a foundation of trust and partnership" that Ukraine is working to restore.
“Ukraine’s wind energy market is not just surviving – it’s active, it’s growing, and it’s open for business,” he emphasized.
Due to security concerns, new construction is concentrated in western Ukraine. According to UWEA, Ukraine has 1.9 GW of installed wind capacity, with 69% located in temporarily occupied territories.
Konechenkov said Ukraine’s renewable energy strategy aims to reach 6.2 GW of wind capacity by 2030. He also highlighted wind’s role in building a decentralized, resilient energy network under the Distributed Generation Development Strategy.
A wind energy forum is scheduled to take place in Lviv on September 9.
Earlier, at the 5th Energy Law Conference on July 3, Konechenkov said Ukraine could commission 300–500 MW of new wind capacity in 2025, depending on grid connectivity. (om/ez)
