Russia unleashes record drone attack on Ukraine after Trump-Putin call
Journal Staff Report

KYIV, July 4 – Russia launched a record 539 drones at Ukraine overnight into Friday, striking residential areas and key infrastructure just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had made “no progress” in a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported intercepting 476 drones and 11 cruise and ballistic missiles. The overnight assault lasted 13 hours, injuring at least 23 people, according to Kyiv authorities. Explosions were heard across the capital as residents took shelter in subway stations and underground garages.

“Absolutely horrible and sleepless night in Kyiv. One of the worst so far,” Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the assault “one of the most large-scale air attacks” to date.

Zelenskyy also noted that the first air raid sirens began shortly after news broke of the Trump-Putin call. “Yet again, Russia is showing it has no intention of ending the war and terror,” he said.

The strikes caused fires and structural damage across several Kyiv districts, partially destroying multi-story buildings and damaging the city’s railway system. Five ambulances responding to the scene were also hit, according to the State Emergency Service.

The assault marked the second record-breaking attack in a week, following a barrage of 537 drones and missiles five days earlier. In June alone, Russia launched over 330 missiles, including nearly 80 ballistic missiles, along with 5,000 combat drones and 5,000 gliding bombs, Ukraine’s foreign ministry reported.

On Thursday, Trump held a nearly hour-long call with Putin, later expressing disappointment with the outcome. “I didn’t make any progress with him today at all,” he said, adding he planned to speak with Zelenskyy early Friday.

The attacks come amid a pause in some U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine, including air defense missiles, following a review of defense stockpiles. Trump said the decision was made to protect U.S. reserves.

Since 2022, the U.S. has been Ukraine’s largest defense donor, but the shift in policy under Trump has raised concerns about the future of American support. The Trump-Putin call did not touch on the aid suspension, according to Russian media citing Kremlin aides. However, Trump reportedly urged an end to the war, while Putin responded that Russia would not “back down” from its goals. (cnn/ez)
