KYIV, May 22 – G7 finance ministers have agreed to continue supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian invasion, but failed to agree on a joint statement, Bloomberg reports.
“Finance ministers from the Group of Seven industrialized nations have agreed to continue backing Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion, German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said on the sidelines of a G7 meeting in Canada,” the agency reports.
“It became clear that within the G7 format, support will continue unchanged, and that Ukraine can rely on strong solidarity and substantial support from the G-7 countries,” Klingbeil said Wednesday in the mountain village of Banff.
As of late Wednesday, though, the group — which comprises the US, Canada, Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Japan, with the European Union also represented — had not agreed on a final statement formalizing the commitment mentioned by Klingbeil.
Uncertainty had surrounded the talks ahead of the summit, particularly regarding whether the US under President Donald Trump would maintain its backing for Kyiv.
“We’re working intensely on it — there are still a few points we need to resolve,” Klingbeil said of the statement. “But I’m cautiously optimistic that we’ll get there.”
Previously, the German finance minister held separate meetings with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko, and other European colleagues. (om/ez)
