KYIV, July 1 – The electricity shortage in Ukraine, which arose due to massive attacks by the Russian Federation on the energy system, the latest of which led to the destruction of about half of the generating capacity, which is estimated at more than 80% for thermal power plants and more than 40% for hydroelectric power plants, will continue until the end of 2025, it is reported in updated memorandum with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
"Energy deficits are expected to persist throughout 2024 and 2025, although their scale will be limited by the resilient energy system. Recent market estimates, including by [the IMF] staff, put the average energy deficit for 2024 around 10 percent, gradually decreasing over 2025, and eliminated by early 2026," the memorandum states.
