KYIV, Jan 29 – Soon, the six-year period allowed by the manufacturer for the presence of nuclear fuel in all six reactors of the VVER-1000 power units of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhia NPP will expire, in connection with this a new threat to nuclear and radiation safety may arise.

"The subsequent operation of such fuel violates the terms of the technical specifications established taking into account safety standards, and can lead to destruction of the integrity of the fuel elements and, as a result, to a radiation accident," acting Board Chairman of NNEGC Energoatom Petro Kotin said last week.
