KYIV, April 5 – President Volodymyr Zelensky called for the creation of a tribunal over the Russian military, guilty of crimes, and also proposed holding a global conference on reforming the UN in Kyiv.
Speaking via video link at the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Zelensky asked a question: "Are you ready for the closing of the UN? Do you think that the time of international law is over? If your answer is no, then you need to act now."
"We must immediately return the force. It is necessary to immediately reform the UN system in such a way that the right of veto is not the right of death, so that there is a fair representation in the Security Council of all regions of the world," he said.
Zelensky recalled that "the world watched and did not want to see either the occupation of Crimea, or even earlier the war against Georgia, or even earlier the alienation of the entire Transnistrian region from Moldova."
"The way to stop this is to immediately bring the Russian military and those who gave them orders to account for war crimes on the territory of Ukraine. Everyone who gave criminal orders and carried them out, killing people, will end up under a tribunal, which should be similar to the Nuremberg trials," the leader of Ukraine said.
According to Zelensky, "now is the time to reform the security system."
"To do this, we propose to convene a global conference, and we ask that this be done in peaceful Kyiv in order to decide how we will reform the global security system, how we will really guarantee the inviolability of recognized borders, how we will assert the supremacy of international law," Zelensky said.
