KYIV, March 28 - Ukraine calls on the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) to immediately take measures to demilitarize the exclusion zone of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant and introduce a special UN mission to eliminate the risk of nuclear disaster, a Ukrainian official said.
Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said Russian forces that currently use Chornobyl as military base underestimate the affect of potential radioactive poisoning and can potentially trigger a disaster.
"In the context of nuclear security, the irresponsible and unprofessional actions of the Russian military pose a very serious threat not only to Ukraine, but also to hundreds of millions of Europeans. Therefore, we demand from the UN Security Council to immediately take measures to demilitarize the exclusion zone and introduce a special UN mission there to eliminate the risk of a repeat of the Chornobyl accident as a result of the actions of the Russian occupation forces," she said on the 1 + 1 TV channel.
