KYIV, Aug 16 – A video surveillance footage taken at the home of Konstantin Pavlov, a mayor of Kryviy Rih who was found dead on Sunday, shows presence of no other people nearby, a local police chief said Monday.
Anatoliy Shchadylo, the head of the National Police Directorate in Dnipropetrovsk region, said investigators are still studying the footage for clues to understand what had happened in the house at the time of his death.
"A detailed inspection of the scene was made. The video surveillance cameras are being analyzed. ... The information that was on the server is being processed today. We do not see other people on the video, a detailed analysis is being carried out," Schadylo said at a briefing.
Police said that one wound from the Saiga semi-automatic rifle was found on the body of the deceased. The weapon seized at the scene was sent for a comprehensive examination.
Shchadylo said that law enforcement officers are considering three versions of what happened - murder, suicide, and careless handling of weapons.
"The version of incitement to suicide is not excluded, any version will be checked," he added.
Pavlov, 48, was found dead in his house with a gunshot wound on Sunday.
He is a member of the Opposition Platform - For Life party. He was elected mayor of Kryvyi Rih, a city in central Ukraine which is also the hometown of Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, last December.
Opposition Platform - For Life is one of the main opposition parties in Ukraine.
Pavlov was elected the mayor in December 2020 when he had competed against Dmytro Shevchyk, a candidate who represented Zelensky’s party the Servant of the People. Zelenskiy has called on the people of Kryviy Rih to get out and vote.
However, Pavlov was able to win the vote after incumbent mayor Yuriy Vilkul had urged his supporters to support the opposition candidate. (tl/ez)
