Shortage of railroad grain carriages may hurt farmers in Ukraine: analyst
Journal Staff Report

KYIV, July 26 – A natural reduction in a fleet of grain carriages and a possible increase in grain production in Ukraine by 10-15% will lead to an increase in the rate of payment for the use of grain carriages in September-December 2021 to UAH 700-1,300 per day, expert in the field of transport infrastructure and logistics Valeriy Tkachov said on Facebook.

"Now there is a process of a natural reduction in the fleet of grain carriages in Ukraine. The actual total working fleet of grain carriages is 24,170 units, including a private fleet of 18,450 units, a fleet of Ukrzaliznytsia – 5,730 units. It should also be taken into account that from the working fleet of Ukrzaliznytsia, 2,690 units are in the seasonal stock and are not currently used. To withdraw the working fleet from the seasonal stock of wagons, it will take time and additional repair work," the expert said, specifying that 20,000-24,000 wagons in total may be involved in the transportation of grain this year.
