Zelenskiy orders Ukraine to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP in 2021

KYIV, May 19 – President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a decree that enacts the decision of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), obliging the government to include in the Budget Declaration for 2022-2024 expenditures for ensuring national security and defense of the country for at least 5% of the planned GDP.

The relevant document was published on the president's website on Tuesday.

"The Ukrainian government is to provide in the Budget Declaration for 2022-2024 the spending for ensuring Ukraine's national security and defense for at least 5% of the planned gross domestic product for the Ukrainian security and defense sector," the NSDC decision of May 14, 2021, which was published on the president's website along with the decree, said.
