KYIV, March 4 – Russia-backed armed groups intensified fire in Donbas over the past several days, prompting the Ukrainian army to return fire and triggering an escalation of the conflict for the first time in months.

Moscow used the escalation as a pretext to urge France and Germany on Thursday to pay greater attention to the conflict to make sure the hostilities don’t “cross a dangerous line.”
