TIRASPOL, Aug. 31 - Igor Smirnov, leader of the breakaway republic of Transdniestria, has said he hopes Ukraine's new government will lift the economic blockade on his country.

A new customs regime, which Transdniestria denounced as an economic blockade, was imposed on Tiraspol by Ukraine and Moldova on March 3.
