SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 26 - Former Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko was sentenced to nine years in prison and fined $10 million in a U.S. court on Friday after being convicted in 2004 of extortion and money laundering.

"A significant sentence is appropriate," U.S. District Judge Martin Jenkins said, quoted by Reuters.
