KYIV, Nov 18 – Ukraine should seek geopolitical security guarantees from Germany in connection with the construction by Russia of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, and they can be implemented through guarantees of integration into Europe, Member of the European Parliament (MEP), former Prime Minister of Lithuania Andrius Kubilius said.
"[German Chancellor] Angela Merkel herself said that Nord Stream 2 would not work without guarantees of transit [of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine]. In my opinion, it is quite naïve to hope for some guarantees from [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. Ukraine, first of all, could be helped by German guarantees. But not guarantees of transit through the Ukrainian pipes, but guarantees of geopolitical security that can be brought to life through guarantees of integration," the MEP told Interfax-Ukraine in an interview.
