KYIV, June 25 – National Energy Company Ukrenergo has issued a warning about possible blackouts due to record-high air temperature.
"The energy system is facing a hazard to balanced electricity generation and consumption. A record-high air temperature and a peak power consumption of 17,935 megawatts have been registered in Ukraine in recent two weeks. Emergency stand-by capacity, such as fuel units at thermal power plants (TPPs), is needed to ensure balance in the energy system during hot weather and peak consumption," Ukrenergo said on its website.
The company added that today the country's energy system operates without required spare capacity at TPPs. The situation is also complicated due to the fact that eights TPP units (six units of Centrenergo, one of Donbasenergo, and one of DTEK Energo) are on emergency repairs.
