Signs of new coalition emerge in Ukraine
Journal Staff Report

KIEV, July 27 ??“ A new coalition, which would include President Viktor Yushchenko??™s Our Ukraine party, has been apparently emerging in Parliament on Thursday to promote his pro-Western policy and economic reforms, negotiators said.

The progress, reached at roundtable discussions between five main political parties and the president, significantly reduces chance that Yushchenko would move to dismiss Parliament next week.

Following the 6-hour roundtable, the parties indicated they would probably sign an agreement Friday to guarantee Ukraine??™s accession to the World Trade Organization, joining NATO and close cooperation with the European Union.

The agreement would open way for Our Ukraine to form the coalition with the Regions Party and perhaps the Socialist Party, an alliance that would apparently receive support from Yushchenko.

The Communist Party, a vehemently pro-Russian group, and the bloc led by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, a pro-Western group, would probably not sign the agreement for different reasons.

???Right now we??™re further away from the [scenario] of dismissal of Parliament and closer towards forming the coalition that would include Our Ukraine,??? Roman Zvarych, Our Ukraine??™s top negotiator, told Ukrayinska Pravda online newspaper.

The progress comes two days after political crisis in Ukraine has escalated with the pro-Russian coalition, which includes the Regions Party, the Socialist Party and the Communist Party, challenging the president.
