Tymoshenko may get 50% of posts in govt
Journal Staff Report

KIEV, May 15 ??“ Former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko??™s group will probably get a half of posts in the future government, a top negotiator said Monday citing a draft coalition agreement between three parties.

President Viktor Yushchenko??™s Our Ukraine and the Socialist Party will probably get 36% and 14% of posts, respectively, Yosyp Vinskiy, the chief negotiator for the Socialist Party, said.

???I already signed the draft,??? Vinskiy told NTN television late Monday. ???Tymoshenko promised to sign it by Tuesday morning.???

The figures provide a glimpse on structure of the government that may be appointed by the three groups that will control a simple majority in Parliament following the March 26 general election.

The groups, which had been holding coalition talks since late March, only recently made progress after Tymoshenko had agreed to draft a roadmap of key policy decisions by the future government.

The development suggests that Tymoshenko, whose groups collected most votes at the election among the three, was likely to secure the post of the prime minister.

Our Ukraine, the second biggest group in the coalition, apparently dropped it original demands for the post of the post.

Underscoring the trend, Prime Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov, who led Our Ukraine for the election, on Monday was registered as a lawmaker by the Central Election Commission. His official resignation will probably have to be approved by Parliament on May 25, when newly elected lawmakers will hold their first session.

Meanwhile, on Monday competition accelerated for the post of the Speaker of Parliament, the second most important job that is to be decided following the March 26 election.

Our Ukraine has been seeking to secure the job, but Tymoshenko has recently flip-flopped by suggesting the position must go to Socialist Party leader Oleksandr Moroz.

Control over the speaker position is important for the success of the government that will have to rely heavily on reform legislation that must be approved by Parliament.

By suggesting the post for the Socialists, Tymoshenko apparently seeks to weaken Our Ukraine, her political rivals, analysts said. (tl/ez)
