KIEV, Oct. 27 – Senior Ukrainian officials stand to gain the most from the recent decision to raise the monthly minimum wage effective Jan. 1 due to legal requirements that make it necessary to index the level of salary earned by senior officials to the minimum subsistence level.
"The main obstacle today to raising the minimum wage is that the minimum wage, according to current legislation, reflects the state guarantee for paying for labor by people who make little money, that is, has become a guarantee for payment of labor of high-ranking officials," Social Policy Minister Andriy Reva said during a briefing on Thursday.
