Mining and metals companies hit hard by railway tariff hike
Journal Staff Report

KIEV, Feb. 9 – Ukrainian mining and metallurgical enterprises say they are suffering significant financial costs due to the introduction of a 30% increase in tariffs for freight rail transportation by the Infrastructure Ministry in late January and are now only barely profitable or are operating with losses.

"Cargo carriage is one of the most important factors of profitability for any business. Up to 90% of domestic turnover falls on railways. The industry simply cannot transfer to vehicles as this can happen with passenger traffic at any time," the director for transport and logistics at Zaporizhstal (Metinvest Group) Oleh Adamanov said.
