KIEV, Jan. 12 - President Viktor Yushchenko on Thursday defended a recent natural gas deal with Russia after opposition groups have criticized as dangerous for the country??™s economy.

Ukraine accepted a 90% hike in natural gas for next year, according to the deal, but will still enjoy some of the lowest gas prices in the region.
