Yushchenko: New technology could extend life of Ukraine nuke plants

KIEV, Feb. 18 – It is possible to extend the terms of operation of Ukrainian nuclear reactors under a new technological policy, President Viktor Yushchenko said.

"In order to ensure the effective operation of nuclear power generation, as well as the formation of an effective security policy and timely modernization, we raise the question of extending the terms of operation of [Ukraine's] nuclear reactors.


Yushchenko tells EBRD president of concern over 2nd IMF tranche

KIEV, Feb. 18 – President Viktor Yushchenko said he is anxious that Ukraine may not receive the second tranche of a multi-billion dollar loan from the International Monetary Fund.

He voiced his concerns at a meeting with the president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Thomas Mirow, in Kiev on Wednesday.


Economy may slide farther this year due to gas deal, says official

KIEV, Feb. 18 - Ukraine’s economy may further deteriorate this year due to the natural gas agreement signed with Russia on Jan. 19, a top Ukrainian security official said Wednesday.

Raisa Bohatyriova, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, criticized Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko for negotiating the agreement.


PM preparing ‘radical’ govt reshuffle to purge Yushchenko loyalists
