Odessa plant privatization ends in fiasco

KIEV, Sept. 29 – Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s push to sell a major Odessa chemical company ended in fiasco Tuesday, forcing the government to cancel the privatization amid allegations of “collusion” among bidders.


MPs from four of five Parliament factions push tobacco ad ban

KIEV, Sept. 28 – Lawmakers from four of the Ukrainian parliament's five factions have proposed a ban on any advertising and promoting of the sale of tobacco, including through event sponsorship, the advertising of tobacco-related trademarks of goods and services, and other subjects of intellectual property rights under which tobacco articles are produced.


PM: Ukraine hopes to get 4th World Bank policy loan this year

KIEV, Sept. 28 – Ukraine hopes to get the Fourth Development Policy Loan from the World Bank by the end of this year, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said.

"We appreciate the dynamics of the preparations for getting the Fourth Development Policy Loan and hope that this process will be successful, and that we will be able to get the 4th loan by the end of this year," Tymoshenko said at a meeting with World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Philippe Le Houerou.


Ukrainian president to visit Italy and Britain in early October

KIEV, Sept.29 – President Viktor Yushchenko will make visits to Britain and Italy early in October, according to Ihor Dolhov, the head of the main service for foreign policies of the presidential secretariat.

On Oct. 6, Yushchenko will be on a visit to Britain, Dolhov said.

Yushchenko is scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Foreign Secretary David Miliband.


UN calling on Ukraine for help in fighting global food crisis

KIEV, Sept. 29 – The UN is calling on Ukraine to help in fighting the global food crisis.

According to a posting on the official Web site of UN in Ukraine issued on Sept. 26, during a future official visit, Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Program (WFP), John Powell, plans to meet representatives of the Ukrainian government and discuss Ukraine's possible contribution of grain to assist in addressing the global food crisis.


PM to head to Moscow for natgas talks, expects deal by week’s end

KIEV, Sept. 29 - Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko will travel to Moscow on Oct. 2 for talks with her Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, over natural gas supplies, the government said in a statement Monday.

The released statement comes hours after Tymoshenko said she plans to sign a gas agreement later this week.


No ‘bullying,’ US president warns Russia
