Yanukovych gives assent to language bill
KIEV, Aug. 8 – Ignoring calls from politicians and warnings of confrontation from opposition groups, President Viktor Yanukovych on Wednesday signed controversial legislation that dramatically elevates the use of the Russian language in Ukraine. |
Prime minister bullish on Ukraine harvest for 2011 and 2012
KIEV, Aug. 8 - Prime Minister Mykola Azarov believes that Ukraine will have a good harvest this year and next.
"We have threshed 31 million tons of wheat. This is an excellent result. I hope that the last days will stand serene, as we need to harvest grains from another one million hectares," he told reporters in the village of Pyrohove near Kiev on Saturday, where he attended the international ethnic festival "Harvest 2011." |
Riot cops disperse Tymoshenko supporters
KIEV, Aug. 8 – About a thousand supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s tried to block Kiev’s main street on Monday, suspending traffic for 10 minutes before being brutally dispersed by riot police. |
IMF Ukraine representative knocks new NBU bank capital requirements
KIEV, Aug. 6 – Additional requirements by the National Bank of Ukraine on capital increases should be applied to all banks that break the set requirements, irrespective of their size, according to the representative of the International Monetary Fund in Ukraine, Max Alier. |
Troops move into threatened Kharkiv base
KIEV, Aug. 8 – Ukraine’s Defense Ministry is sending extra troops to the Kharkiv region to reinforce firefighting effort at a military base that holds one of the largest stores of ammunition in the country.
The troops will surround the perimeter of the base, known as the arsenal No. 61, while two special helicopters capable of putting off massive fires will be deployed and patrol the area. |
NSDC next month will discuss nuclear and radiation security
KIEV, Aug. 7 – The National Security and Defense Council at a meeting scheduled for September is to discuss the further development of the nuclear industrial sector, including problems of nuclear and radiation security, the presidential press service reported on Monday. |
