New NBU rules intended to bolster capital of Ukraine’s ailing banks

KIEV, May 8 – New rules approved by the National Bank of Ukraine are intended to bolster the capital of Ukraine’s ailing banks.

Effective May 18, credits could be provided to the banks for a term of up to one year once, and in the form of a credit line.


Yushchenko urges Tymoshenko to unblock Caspian Sea oil project

KIEV, May 5 - President Viktor Yushchenko on May 5 urged his political rival, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, to immediately unblock a project allowing supplies of Caspian Sea crude oil via the country to the European Union.


IMF okays $2.8 billion loan installment

KIEV, May 10 - The International Monetary Fund on Friday approved disbursement of a $2.8 billion loan installment to Ukraine, easing fears that the country may default on its foreign debt obligations this year.

The IMF also signaled Ukraine may qualify for an additional $3 billion after June 15 if the government sticks to “prudent” fiscal policies and makes progress on bank restructuring and recapitalization.
