KIEV, Sept. 24 - Ukraine has cleared the new design of Westinghouse nuclear fuel assemblies, opening way for an alternative to Russian fuel supplies to its nuclear power plants later this year, an official said Wednesday.

Mykhaylo Hashev, deputy head of the State Inspection for Nuclear Regulation, an agency that supervises the nuclear safety in Ukraine, signed the clearance papers on September 17.
